Questi molti giorni e mesi passati portano a delle riflessioni sulla conduzione sociale della nostra vita. Indubbiamente davanti al pericolo di morire per una influenza al tempo di internet e dei viaggi spaziali è davvero una cosa singolare, inaspettata.

Over many days and weeks bear the thoughts around social behavior of our life. The danger of contracting a mortal flu in the age of Internet and space travels is really strange and unexpected thing.

Davanti a questa realtà si possono avere idee molto diverse ma su una non possiamo transigere : noi viviamo in una società globalizzata e non serve a niente minacciare accusando un particolare popolo di avere infettato il mondo.

About it we can have differences of opinion but we are in agreement about the fact we live in an increasingly globalised society so it is pointless charging some particular people of infecting the whole world.

Mi ricordo i primi anni ’60 quando c’era la corsa agli armamenti atomici e molte nazioni faceva esplodere bombe nucleari, io al tempo ero un ragazzino e fui molto impressionato dalla possibilità che le rivalità tra nazioni potessero distruggere l’esistenza stessa del pianeta. Forse allora ebbi per la prima volta il concetto di democrazia e in senso lato della “politica”.

I remember the early 1960s when it was the nuclear arms race, I was a kid then and I was very impressed by the possibility that the rivarly between nations could destroy the planet. May be since then I started thinking about Democracy or in more general sense about Politics.

Noi tutti siamo abituati alle città e guardandoci attorno troviamo normale essere circondati da edifici, strade, veicoli etc. i nostri occhi e la nostra mente si sono assuefatti a quest’ambiente. E sebbene il traffico stradale sia diminuito in questi mesi di lockdown l’impatto visivo non è così grave. Mi chiedevo però quale fosse quel senso di straniamento che provavo, insomma qualcosa di strano era accaduto al paesaggio.

landscape was something strange
with me.

Infine ho trovato la risposta. Il cielo della terraferma veneziana normalmente è solcato dalle strisce bianche dei jet di linea ed è raro guardare il cielo e non capire se quella è veramente una nuvola oppure la rimanenza di una scia d’aereoplano. Da mesi il cielo è come lo vedeva Canaletto, le nuvole sono nuvole e nient’altro, non c’è confusione.

And finally… I find the answer : usually sky above
venetian mainland is with white stripes by aeroplanes
up in the sky but air traffic was blocked by
epidemics hence sky is precisely the same
saw by a Canaletto. The clouds was clouds and nothing else.

Intermezzo filosofico

La nostra civiltà occidentale è basata sull’individualismo che portato alla esasperazione sconfina nel vedere solamente se stessi come unica realtà. Il campione di questa idea è il filosofo Kierkegaard e la sua idea di singolarità. Quando però il filosofo già malato si accorse di essere prossimo alla morte cercò l’aiuto delle persone vicine di casa per essere portato all’ospedale. In ciò dimostrando che c’è un limite all’egocentrismo e infine dobbiamo umilmente accettare il fatto che non siamo soli e abbiamo necessità della compassione sociale.

A philosophical interlude

Western civilization is founded on individualism that borders on overrating our “I”. Kierkegaard extremed this philosophical position but when the sick philosopher realized that he was at the point of death sought help from the neighbords. He was taken to hospital. In practice egocentrism is limited, we have to humbly accept social compassion is more important than anything else.
