In the 50s (when I was child) was given to me a book carefully kept for sixty years on my bookshelf.
At that time there was nothing if not the drawing to successfully represent things. Photography was expensive even black and white. My parents always told me I was talented in recopying birds illustrated in the book. What to say except that handmade drawings reveal information hard to find with photography? As time passes everything is idealized, maybe I wasn’t so good in drawing and my parents were just nice to me. Fact remains that for several reasons the book survived over the years until today.
Something fascinating is the latin names of birds that curator of ornithology drawings has put as caption.
During my childhood was not difficult in the garden among twigs and foliage to see a small bird as a wren. But what a surprise his Latin name is
Troglodytes troglodytes
not just one but twice named as
troglodyte
such a small and lovely animal. Troglodyte is associated with a rough caveman of prehistoric times! Perhaps Linnaeus in his taxonomy had a playful moment with the wren.
Today is a strange time so I remember Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark Square) before the lockdown that I photographed on morning 7 March 2020.
