” umbrellas by richard brautigan “

I have never been able to understand umbrellas because I don’t care if I get wet. Umbrellas have always been a mystery to me because I can’t understand why they appear just before it starts to rain. The rest of the time they are vacant from the landscape as if they had never existed. Maybe the umbrellas live by themselves in little apartments under Tokyo.

Do the umbrellas know that it is going to rain? because I know that people don’t know. The weathermen says that it will rain tomorrow but it doesn’t and you don’t see a single God-damn umbrella. Then the weatherman says that it will be a sunshiny day and suddenly there are umbrellas everywhere you look, and a few moments later, it starts raining like hell.

Who are these umbrellas?

” nous rêvons de ce que nous avons vu, dit, désiré ou fait , in other words guillotined by a backrest of the bed (maury’s dream painted ) “

Rinaldo Rasa
ditto

Il n’y a pas de rêves absolument raisonnables et qui ne contiennent quelcque incohérence, quelque anochronisme, quelque absurdité. /There are no dreams absolutely reasonable and which do not contain some inconsistency, some anachronism, some absurdity.

” maury’s fatal dream ( and sigmund freud ) “

Maury was sick in bed into his room. His mother was sitting beside him. He dreamed about the Terror in the French Revolution, he saw horrible bloody scenes and then he was brought to the courthouse. Here he saw Robespierre, Marat, Fouquier-Tinville and all the sad heroes of that era. He was obliged to explain about a lot of incidents that he forgot hence he was condemned and brought to the place of execution. A lot of people, an immense crowd was in there. He climbed the scaffold while the executioner tied him to a table; then the table was flipped and the blade of the guillotine went down. Maury feels his head cutting, he see the head separated by the body. In a hurry he wakes up in panic. But he realizes that headbord of the bed crashed hitting his neck as the blade of a guillotine.

This was a dream quoted by Sigmund Freud in his masterwork “The Interpretation of Dreams”. When I read it almost forty years ago I laughed, and every time I think of this dream I think it is the most beautiful lines of the book. Also Freud during the next pages and often quoted this dream that hit him. The headboard hit Maury’s head, he wake up hence the guillotine story was lived in milliseconds.

” a tragedy in the world of crow ( on the numbers ) “

A squire was determined to shoot a crow which made its nest in the watch-tower of his estate. Repeatedly he had tried to surprise the bird, but in vain : at the approach of man the crow would leave its nest. From a distant tree it would watchfully wait until the man had left the tower and then return to its nest. One day the squire hit upon a ruse: two men entered the tower, one remained within, the other came out and went on. But the bird was not deceived: it kept away until the man within came out. The experiment was repeated on the sueceeding days with two, three, then four men, yet without success. Finally, five men were sent: as before, all entered the tower, and one remained while the other four came out and went away. Here the crow lost count. Unable to distinguish between four and five it promptly returned to its nest. (Tobias Dantzig, Number, The Language of Science)

of course the poor crow do not pass an aritmetic test, maybe the crow made an error of calculation, he was distracted by something, but in this case he did a fatal error. another topic is what is the base N in the world of the crow ? anyway i thank the crow and the snail.  they have their place in thinking.
