howard unruh a berserk in new jersey ( robert eisler )

Somebody think that only in a village into the savage jungle of Malaysia it is possible that a man with a knife kris thru a street can stabbing everybody. Perhaps it is useful a reading of this reportage by New York from the newspaper “Daily Express”. The assassin is a descendant of the german poet Fritz von Unruh that was also a prussian military become famous years ago because a drama of incest between sister and brother. The theatrical piece was on stage for long time in Berlin. This descendant of whom I am talking about maybe is the “black sheep” of the Unruh family but his deeds could be been usual during the Reichsmordwoche (“The night of the long knives”, Germany 1934) or in the extermination camp of Auschwitz.

Below it is describe a multiple homicide happened on September 7 1949. The name of the murderer was Howard Unruh, 28, he was a former soldier high tall. In german language his surname means “uneasy”. He killed 12 persons and wounded 5. That day he was parking his car near a drugstore without thinking that the owner of drugstore Maurice Cohen, 40, denied the permission to parking there in front of the shop. Unruh was a student of chemistry, well dressed with white shirt and tie but also with a gun Luger in his pocket.

Thus he went upstairs the Cohen house and he shoot to the mother of Maurice (age 63) , she was on bed. Rose (38), the wife of Maurice, scared hides his son Harold (12) in his bedroom. Done this she was hit and killed by Unruh with a bullet stright to the heart. Then he went to the laundry and killed a young bride in white dress, then was the turn of the man of shoeshine to be killed. In the barber shop of Clark Hoover there were three children, one being was able to escape but the other two were killed because they wait at the red light of a traffic light. A man went out of the car for helping the child but Unruh killed him. Also two women stopped there were killed then Unruh entered a bar, the bartender took his own gun but he miss the shot. Unruh killed another woman. In all this it was five women, five men and two children killed. Howard came back to his apartment that after short time was surrounded by fifty agents of the police department of New Jersey. The policemen threw tear gas inside the house.

Hence Unruh said, ‘I surrender me to you! Don’t shoot!’. The whole event took 45 minutes then the neighbors came out to River-road, Camden yelling, ‘Kill him! Kill him!’ while the policemen put Howard into the police car. The police was able to bring away Howard, out of the crowd.

The neighbors remembered Howard as the man  often walking the River-road reading the Bible, a quiet man, but in his basement there were a lot of guns and he was always to the shooting range. The hobby of Unruh were the guns.

In the cell of police department Unruh said that he was thinking to kill people from a long time because the people in the street talks about him in impolite way. The legal charge was first-degree murder. He pull the trigger of the gun against people like a hunter shoot to ducks without thinking he was really firing against human beings. Howard Unruh died october 19 2009, age 88, imprisoned diagnosed with insanity.

  2. dear Nasuko. maybe. maybe. It seems an attenuating circumstance for the crime made by Howard. it is a case a bit different from (e.g.) Charles Manson massacre in LA late sixties of past century.

in some way Robert Eisler the psichatrist , philosopher and antopologist tell us, but remind that he wrote in 1951, that the consequence of WWII is a generation of “monster” that see human being in a distorded way. killing 13 persons only for a trouble of parking is of course a act of insanity BUT it have to be put inside the times of a psycology of war (e.g. the war of everybody against everybody etc.) . if people look at in bad way isn’t a reason for a massacre but (e.g.) a sniper (or a military man) can perceive the glance as a menace for his life (or something like).

Robert Eisler the psicologist was jew and a survivor of an extremination camp.

kiss and hugs to you friend.

There is the person who causes indiscriminate murder in Japan.
They say, “want to murder anyone, not the reason” at a trial.
They are hospitalized the mental hospital not capital punishment ; probably is ・・. forever
I cannot understand the person who is crazy.
